Collection: Bio Filters

Our collection of biofilters brings together a range of essential filtration solutions designed to support a healthy, balanced aquatic ecosystem by harnessing the power of beneficial bacteria. Unlike mechanical filters that simply remove debris, biological filtration focuses on breaking down harmful waste products such as ammonia and nitrite, produced by fish, uneaten food, and organic matter, into less toxic substances through the natural process of the nitrogen cycle. Each product is designed to maximise surface area, providing an ideal environment for colonies of beneficial bacteria to thrive and efficiently process waste. Whether for a compact home aquarium or a large garden pond, bio filtration systems help maintain stable water conditions, reduce the risk of toxic spikes, and promote the overall well-being of fish and aquatic plants.

Which is better, bio balls or ceramic rings?

Ceramic rings are higher in density and offer a bigger surface area for beneficial bacteria, making them ideal for canister filters, but they can clog. Bio balls are best for wet/dry filters, allowing high water flow and oxygenation without clogging.

Can you have too much bio filtration?

You can't have too much bio filtration as the beneficial bacteria will only grow to meet the waste. However, you can have too much filter media, and this can cause clogs, restrict water flow and lead to an un-oxygenated tank.
