The water from your aquarium will naturally evaporate over time, particularly during the summer months, if you’re using high intensity lighting or are operating a sump filtration system. If using the latter, it is extremely important to keep the water level in your sump consistent to prevent pumps running dry or the water level used by your protein skimmer becoming incorrect. Additionally, if you’re keeping a marine aquarium, as water evaporates your aquarium’s water will increase in salinity which can cause problems with sensitive livestock.

Automatic Top Up systems address this problem. Using a float switch, when the water level drops below a preset level, freshwater from a reservoir can be slowly pumped into the fish tank/sump, ensuring the aquarium’s water level is properly maintained.
