What is Nitrate?
Nitrate (NO₃) is a byproduct of the nitrogen cycle, formed when nitrite is oxidized by nitrobacter bacteria. While essential in small amounts, excessive nitrate can harm fish, corals, and plant life.
Key Features:
- Formed by Filtration Bacteria – Nitrobacter bacteria convert nitrite into nitrate as part of the nitrogen cycle.
- Affects Fish Health – High nitrate levels can cause poor coloration, lethargy, and breeding difficulties.
- Impacts Coral Growth – In seawater, excessive nitrate leads to stunted coral development.
- Promotes Algae Growth – Elevated nitrate contributes to unwanted algae blooms in aquariums.
- Easily Measured – The Waterlife Nitrate Test provides a color reading within 6 minutes, detecting levels from 0 to 200 mg/L.
Ideal Nitrate Levels:
- Seawater: 0–20 ppm
- Freshwater: 0–50 ppm
Regular testing helps maintain a healthy aquatic environment!
