Encourage Natural Koi Spawning

During the breeding season, mature koi naturally search for suitable vegetation and surfaces on which to deposit their eggs.

Many ornamental ponds contain limited aquatic plant life, making spawning brushes a practical alternative.

Black Knight Spawning Brushes provide soft filaments that imitate natural plant roots and vegetation, encouraging female koi to release their eggs onto the brushes.

Soft & Fish-Friendly Construction

Koi spawning can be energetic, with fish moving rapidly around the pond.

The soft, smooth brush filaments provide a suitable spawning surface and help reduce contact with hard pond walls and edges.

Important: Always use purpose-made spawning brushes rather than standard pond filter brushes, which may be too coarse for breeding fish.

Helps Protect Fish Eggs

During spawning, female koi release adhesive eggs that attach to the brush filaments.

Once spawning is complete, the brushes can be carefully transferred into a suitable separate hatching environment.

This helps protect fertilised eggs from adult fish, which may otherwise consume the eggs and newly hatched fry.

Ideal for the Pond Breeding Season

Koi typically spawn during warmer spring and summer conditions, often between April and August depending on water temperature and weather.

Providing suitable spawning brushes in advance helps prepare the pond for natural breeding activity.

How to Use:

1. Position the spawning brushes just below the pond water surface.
2. Secure them using suitable ties attached to the brush end loops.
3. Place the brushes slightly away from hard pond edges.
4. Allow mature breeding fish access to the brushes.
5. Monitor the brushes for attached eggs following spawning.
6. If breeding fry, carefully transfer egg-covered brushes into a suitable filtered and oxygenated hatching tank or pond.
7. Maintain suitable water quality and temperature throughout incubation.

Easy Cleaning & Reuse

Black Knight Spawning Brushes can be reused for future breeding seasons.

Once spawning and hatching are complete, remove the brushes and rinse thoroughly to remove remaining debris.

Allow them to dry completely before storing in a clean, dry location until required again.
