Salifert Nitrate (NO₃) Profi Test Kit

A build-up of nitrate often occurs when anaerobic zones are insufficient or when the denitrification process is incomplete. High nitrate levels can lead to unwanted algae growth, which may irritate nearby corals and hinder coral development directly.

The ideal nitrate concentration in a well-balanced reef aquarium is below 1 mg/l. Fish-only aquariums typically tolerate higher levels, but ongoing monitoring remains important.

Many nitrate test kits work by chemically converting nitrate into nitrite, which is then measured. However, this can lead to inaccurate readings due to amine interference, which may cause results to appear significantly lower than the true value.

Sources of phosphate include fish food and low-grade activated carbon. Washing thawed fish food and choosing high-quality carbon can greatly reduce phosphate input.

For removal, liquid or granular phosphate removers are recommended. These not only reduce phosphate but also lower silicate and organic levels while removing heavy metals.
