Seachem Denitrate™ is an economical, natural, and highly porous filter media designed for efficient nitrate removal in aquarium systems. With a specialised pore structure, Denitrate™ supports both aerobic nitrification on the outer surface and anaerobic denitrification within its core, allowing for comprehensive nitrate management. Its high surface area fosters a dense population of beneficial bacteria, essential for maintaining water quality. Unlike other materials, Denitrate™ relies on anaerobic bacterial activity to remove nitrate, providing reliable and sustainable filtration.
Why It’s Different: Unlike standard "live" or reef rocks, which also remove nitrate anaerobically, Denitrate™ maximises this process by channelling water through its porous structure, promoting optimal anaerobic conditions. This unique design prevents high flow rates, which can disrupt the anaerobic environment needed for effective nitrate reduction. At lower flow rates, Denitrate™ functions as both an aerobic and anaerobic filter, ideal for use in canister filters, drip trays, sumps, and box filters.
Key Features:
- Dual Functionality: Aerobic nitrification and anaerobic denitrification for balanced nitrate control
- High Surface Area: Supports a dense bacterial population for efficient filtration
- Cost-Effective: Long-lasting filtration with sustainable nitrate reduction
- Ideal for Various Filters: Works in canister filters, sumps, drip trays, or box filters
- Adaptable Flow Rate: Functions as an anaerobic filter below 50 gallons/hour, or aerobic above 100 gallons/hour
Usage Instructions: Place Denitrate™ where water flows through it, ensuring the flow does not exceed 200 L (50 gallons) per hour for effective anaerobic conditions. Rinse before use to remove dust. Nitrate reduction should begin within days, and levels should stabilise around 4-5 mg/L. Each 500mL treats 100-200L (25-50 gallons) depending on nitrate levels and biological load. For very high initial nitrate levels, perform water changes before using Denitrate™.
