2) Add one level scoop of Nitrate Reagent 2. Stir to mix. It is normal for not all powder to be dissolve
3) Compare to colour chart (top scale) after 5-8 minutes

To ensure that your test kit is working, Seachem include a Nitrate Reference sample, which has a reference value of 10mg/l.

Why test for nitrite and nitrate? Both of these compounds are toxic to fish and naturally increase in time due to the break down of organic wastes in your fish tank (biological filtration). Wastes are broken down by your filter into ammonia, which is converted into nitrite and then nitrate. It is therefore important to ensure you test for all three, as an increase in ammonia or nitrite will indicate that your filter is not performing appropriately. Should nitrate levels increase, check your tap water to confirm that you do not have high levels of nitrate here. If not, ensure you increase the number of partial water changes you carry out to maintain as low a level of nitrate as possible.
