The Red Sea REEF-FRAME MAX 170 Marine Aquarium is a complete reef aquarium system combining a 136 litre display tank with a 39 litre in-cabinet sump, providing a manufacturer-rated total system water volume of 174 litres. Its 60 x 53 x 50 cm display offers a practical space for creating a compact marine aquascape with live rock, corals and suitable marine fish. Part of the REEF-FRAME range, the MAX 170 combines the aquarium, reinforced cabinet, filtration sump and plumbing with a matched package of lighting, circulation, filtration and aquarium monitoring equipment.

The REEF-FRAME range brings together ultra-clear glass construction, eurobracing and marine-spec plywood cabinets designed to support the full contour of the aquarium. The MAX 170 provides a complete starting point for a reef system, with the main equipment selected for the aquarium's size and filtration arrangement. Its compact footprint makes it suitable for rooms where a larger marine aquarium may not be practical, while the in-cabinet sump keeps the main filtration equipment beneath the display.

The display aquarium measures 60 cm long, 53 cm wide and 50 cm high, providing space for arranging rockwork, coral colonies and swimming areas. The ultra-clear front glass is 10 mm thick, the side panels are 12 mm thick, the bottom glass is 10 mm thick and the back glass is 8 mm thick. Eurobracing reinforces the upper perimeter of the aquarium, while high-quality euro-silicone bonds the glass panels for long-term structural integrity.

The aquarium is supported by a marine-spec plywood cabinet designed to support the full contour of the glass structure. Adjustable levelling feet allow the cabinet to be positioned correctly during installation. The REEF-FRAME cabinet range is available in black, white and classic oak finishes, allowing the aquarium to be selected to suit different interiors.

The REEF-FRAME MAX 170 features a central overflow box that conceals the aquarium plumbing. A large surface skimmer with removable comb sections collects water from the display and provides convenient access for routine cleaning. Enlarged downflow pipes and a rectangular flow profile are designed to reduce turbulence and support quieter water movement through the system.

The ReefGate high-precision gate valve allows accurate regulation of water flowing from the display into the sump. Adjusting the valve helps balance the downflow against the return pump, reducing operating noise. Hydrodynamic piping supports efficient water circulation, while optional metric and USA connector kits allow compatible plumbing modifications.

A single 25 mm curved return outlet directs water back into the display aquarium. The MAX package includes one ReefRun G2 4000 return pump, providing adjustable flow between 2,000 and 4,000 litres per hour, a maximum head height of 3.4 metres and power consumption of 16–38 W. The pump includes local flow control, with ReefBeat integration available through a compatible ReefRun Dual Controller.

The integrated 39 litre Reef Spec sump provides dedicated space for mechanical filtration, protein skimming and the return pump. Its skimmer chamber has an adjustable operating water height, allowing the level to be set according to the requirements of the supplied protein skimmer. A bubble trap helps prevent air bubbles from returning to the display, while the removable mechanical filtration compartment allows convenient installation of a compatible ReefMat automatic roller filter.

The MAX 170 includes one ReefMat 250 automatic roller filter, rated for aquarium systems up to 250 litres. It has a maximum flow capacity of 3,500 litres per hour and uses an 8 cm wide fleece roll measuring 32 metres in length. The unit measures 16 x 20 x 49 cm and automatically advances the fleece as it collects waste. ReefBeat connectivity provides filter usage monitoring and replacement notifications, helping simplify routine mechanical filtration maintenance.

Lighting is provided by one ReefLED G2 115 with a mounting arm. The light features a 115 W LED array, an adjustable 10,000–23,000 K spectrum and a separate 3 W moonlight channel. Published lighting performance figures include PAR values of 500 at the water surface and 150 at a depth of 50 cm. ReefBeat control allows customised lighting schedules, acclimation programmes and lunar cycles, providing flexibility when setting lighting conditions for the aquarium's inhabitants.

Water movement is supported by one ReefWave 25 circulation pump, providing a maximum flow rate of 7,500 litres per hour with power consumption of 4–25 W. The pump is recommended for aquariums measuring 45–120 cm in length and is compatible with glass up to 15 mm thick. Its 3 metre cable provides flexibility when positioning the pump and routing its power connection.

The supplied REEFER DC 300 protein skimmer removes dissolved organic waste from aquarium water. It features a water flow rate of 1,000 litres per hour, an air intake of 500 litres per hour, power consumption of 20 W and an overall height of 53 cm. The skimmer uses a Sicce PSK DC-1200 pump and includes automatic self-levelling, foam-wetness monitoring and collection-cup waste-level monitoring to support consistent operation.

The REEF-FRAME MAX 170 includes ReefControl Pro with a pH/temperature probe and a ReefControl automatic top-up (ATO) module. ReefControl Pro supports up to seven compatible digital ReefSense probes or sensors, providing live readings, historical logs and notifications. The supplied probe provides temperature-compensated pH measurement with a stated accuracy of 0.05 pH and precision of 0.01 pH, alongside temperature measurement accurate to 0.05°C.

The ReefControl ATO module uses solid-state water-level detection to identify evaporation losses and activate freshwater replacement. Its integrated temperature sensor has a stated accuracy of 0.1°C. The supplied ATO pump provides a maximum flow rate of 300 litres per hour, a maximum head height of 2.5 metres and power consumption of 6–10 W. An installation kit includes the sensor bracket, pump, siphon breaker, tube holder and 3 metres of silicone tubing.

A slide-out control panel 25 is also included, providing a dedicated mounting area for aquarium controllers and compatible electrical equipment within the cabinet. This helps organise the monitoring and filtration controls while keeping them accessible for routine adjustments and maintenance.
